Our Story

The African Women’s Group Scotland became a registered charity in June 1994 with a simple aim: to provide a safe space for African women to meet, breaking the isolation and loneliness they often faced. Since then, we have grown into a recognised voice for our community in Aberdeenshire and across Scotland, working in partnership with other African groups throughout the UK. While much progress has been made, there is still important work to be done in areas such as immigration, employment, health, and political participation. AWGS continues to advocate on these issues, sharing information, supporting those in need, and empowering African women to thrive.

Empowerment and Impact

We empower African women to grow mentally, physically, emotionally, and economically. We encourage them to actively engage with their local and wider communities, giving them the confidence to voice their opinions on important issues—whether local, national, or international.

AWGS also maintains strong links with women’s groups in Africa, supporting their initiatives and projects to further our shared goals. At AWGS, our mission is to ensure that every African woman in the diaspora not only survives but thrives.

Giving a Voice

Giving a Voice

We also want to be a voice and face of women from the Southern Hemisphere (Africa) and women in the Northern Hemisphere working together in the area of women empowerment, poverty reduction, promotion of equality, justice and focus on the girl child. We work closely with some grassroots women in Africa in the area of poverty reduction and education
